SUICIDE PREVENTION CANTERBURY WAITAHA

Tirohia te pae whānui, tuātu i te pō. Tūramarama ki te ora, whakamauā kia tīnā!

See the broad horizon (beyond the darkness), hold on to life!

About us

Suicide Prevention Canterbury Waitaha is a collaborative and coordinated approach to preventing suicides and suicide attempts in Canterbury. This collaboration includes mana whenua, cultural leaders and representatives from health, education, social services, local councils and community groups. Together, we work to build hope.

The Canterbury Suicide Prevention Governance Group was established in 2018 to provide an integrated approach to suicide prevention in our region. We activate initiatives and projects collaboratively and implement the cross-agency Canterbury Suicide Prevention Action plan, which aligns with the national Suicide Prevention Action Plan: Every Life Matters, He Tapu te Oranga o ia tangata.

The team of Suicide Prevention and Postvention Coordinators, based at Pegasus Health, is funded by Te Aka Whai Ora to organise and implement a range of suicide prevention and postvention activities. These are designed to reduce the number of suicides and suicide attempts in Canterbury and provide bereavement and post-attempt support.

This website provides resources and information about our approach and mahi – we hope you find it helpful. For queries or more information, please get in touch with us below.

Karl Belcher
Primary Mental Health Service Manager | Chair - Canterbury Suicide Postvention Working Group

Tēnā koe, ko Karl Belcher tōku ingoa.

As the Kaiārahi Tiaki Tangata Whaiora, (Service Manager, Pegasus Primary Mental Health) I believe in the importance of collective responsibility and embrace the privilege of advocating for mental health and wellbeing within our community. As a shared group of kaitiaki, we are bestowed a gift to uphold the dignity and significance of both those present and those who have passed away.

We honour this through the practice of Manaakitanga by supporting one another as we strive to create a culture of care and compassion throughout the Rohe to grow suicide prevention initiatives and reduce the rates of suicide and minimise the impact across community.

Suicide prevention is an ever changing and challenging yet rewarding role. I recognise the privilege to have the opportunity to mahi in this space as a Suicide Prevention and Postvention Coordinator.

Dan de Boer
Registered Nurse | Suicide Pre/Postvention Team

Kia ora koutou, ko Dan de Boer toku ingoa, no Ōtautahi ahau.

I am an idealist by nature, and I hope for an equitable society where all lives are acknowledged and valued. I’m a Registered Nurse since 2002 with experience in medical, mental health, and counselling. It is an honour to be a part of our small cohesive Suicide Pre/Postvention team at Pegasus Health.

Our mahi is about enhancing lives at some of the difficult times we could all potentially experience, but for the grace of luck. I want those times to be prevented or managed by the support of people who care about what happens to us and want to see us succeed in life, by us being accessible, responsive, and engaged in our connections with people.
